Progresso, seems to be a very gluten free friendly soup company. If you’re looking for gluten free soup, check the labels of their soups in the regular soup aisles, as some of their soups there are labeled as gluten free…probably because they are gluten free naturally, but the beauty of finding those soups is that they come at the regular soup price and you don’t end of paying the usual higher price of things that are manufactured to be gluten free. In addition to their regular soups that are gluten free, Progresso has apparently recently begun producing soup specifically manufactured to be gluten free.
The first soup that I tried is their chicken soup. Interestingly, the soup is labeled as “Homestyle Chicken Soup” with no mention of noodles. The first two cans that I opened had all the expected ingredients for chicken soup — but had no noodles. I was admittedly quite disappointed, as noodles, for me, are a big part of why I love chicken noodle soup. I remember thinking to myself, “Well, that’s one way to make soup gluten free…just don’t put any noodles in it at all.” I ended up cooking my own gluten free noodles to add to the soup and I was going to sadly write off this soup as a no-go for future purchases, however, the third (and final) can that I opened and tried, had noodles included—and by the way, every can I’ve tried since then has had noodles—so I’m guessing that those first two cans I opened, must have been the odd cans that somehow missed noodles during the manufacturing process.
Once I tried a can of this soup that contained noodles, I found it to be delicious. As opposed to some canned soups with small and mushy ingredients, these ingredients seem fresh, and the ingredient sizes are wonderfully large and cooked just right. My only issue with this soup is that there doesn’t appear to be enough of their delicious gluten free noodles. Noodles, to me, make a soup heartier and satisfying and I was left craving more of their noodles.
Thank you, Progresso, for making gluten-free soup for so long, and now, for making this chicken noodle soup. If you’re craving a bowl of chicken noodle soup, I recommend this one. I’m giving it four stars but with more noodles, I would easily give it a five.
