Schar bread was one of the first gluten-free breads that I encountered as I began my gluten-free diet many years ago. My wife discovered it in a health-food store in Dallas, TX. I had a sense back then—based on the scope of the products they offered—that Schar was probably an early producer of gluten-free products and, according to their official website, Schar (a European company) has been making gluten-free products for decades. Thank you, Schar for being a gluten-free pioneer!! Given the large number of gluten-free products they offer, I fully anticipate that many of their products will certainly wind up being reviewed here.
Schar’s bread was one of the first gluten-free breads that I tried, and while I was grateful and eager to once again enjoy bread, the Schar bread of the day didn’t really appeal to me, unfortunately. It had the texture and flavor of something that seemed highly manufactured, and it came across as a bit tasteless. It lacked that melt-in-your-mouth appeal of excellent bread, and so while I did purchase it from time to time, I came away a bit disappointed and continued my search for a bread more suited to my tastes.
About six months ago, my local Walmart was out of my favorite brand of bread and purchased a loaf of Schar as a substitute. I noticed from the package that this was a “new recipe” and I have now discovered a new fondness for Schar bread. The new recipe seems to have overcome many of the earlier objections. It does taste, look, and feel more like a loaf of bread from the oven. I’ve used it in sandwiches and discovered that it makes excellent French Toast. I look forward to purchasing again, and also to purchasing more of the Schar products that are available.
